About us

Community

We team with a variety of consultants – landscape gardeners, hospitality consultants, bar and kitchen designers, chefs, draftspersons and architects – all of whom are specialists in their fields within the East African context.

Who we are

The design team is headed up by Emma Campbell and Chris Payne who are supported by Jax Munene our General Manager who’s been a core member of the team for 7 years, and Grace Mwangi our very own certified public accountant.

What we deliver

We provide a fully rounded interior solution. If required we will source everything down to the tea spoons and hand over your property with a fire burning in the grate, flowers in the rooms and a home cooked meal in the oven.

Sustainability

On our smaller, boutique projects, we are proud to say that 80-90% of the work we deliver has been made in East Africa – making every effort along the way to utilise sustainable materials for our environmentally conscious clients.

How we work

We like to be involved as early as possible on a project, often on a green field site. We collaborate with the architect during plan development to ensure that all the interior design aspects of a project are taken into consideration.

Our experience

We have over 15 years experience designing luxury properties across East Africa. We source globally – in India, Bali, Egypt, Turkey and the UK where we have excellent contacts – and we travel globally to deliver the design brief on budget.

Interior Idea team

Chris Payne

Chris has lived and worked in Kenya for 18 years. His career here as a graphic designer led from running an independent design house to being Partner and Creative Director of TBWA/Creative, an internationally affiliated advertising agency.

In 2003 Chris opened Kenya’s first home store – IDEA – which became the foundation stone for Interior IDEA which was founded in 2005 to deliver bespoke interior design solutions to East Africa’s high end tourism sector.

Emma Campbell

Emma has lived and worked in Kenya for 20 years, initially in her role as Contributing Editor to American House and Garden for UK & East Africa and latterly as an Interior Decorator and Camp Manager to some of the regions’ most iconic lodges including Mahale Greystoke, Laragai House and Elephant Watch Camp Samburu.

Her extensive travels throughout East and Southern Africa have given Emma a very good knowledge of the great variety of cultures, skills, design and customs that this kaleidoscopic part of Africa has to offer.

Jacquie Munene

Jax was born and bought up in Kenya. In 1994 she moved to the UK to study a Masters in Business Administration at Hull University.

In 2001 she returned to Kenya to run the GoDown Arts Centre in Nairobi where she played a pivotal role in the developing East African contemporary art scene. She joined Interior Idea in 2007.
